PPP demands immediate suspension of IGP, CCPO

There were different views about the identification of the accused that attacked former Sindh chief minister, Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim, in the Sindh Assembly and threw his shoe at him but he escaped unhurt.

It was also a mystery as to how the person managed to get the entry pass for the Governor’s Gallery. But the police officers posted on security duty in the Sindh Assembly claimed that the attacker was identified as Agha Jawaid.

The Chief Minister’s House authorities confirmed that Agha Jawaid was very close to Arbab Rahim and he was working in the CM House as private media consultant. These authorities said he belonged to the former People’s Student Federation and joined the PPP (Shaheed Bhutto). He later joined the Sindh Democratic Alliance (SDA). Arbab Rahim was the chief of SDA and later the party merged in the former ruling PML-Q on the instructions of President Pervez Musharraf. Agha Jawaid himself admitted having attacked Arbab and told different channels the former chief minister deserved this sort of treatment. He gave interviews to most of the TV channels in the Assembly building and he was again seen sitting in the Governor’s Gallery while the police officers claimed that all assembly gates had been closed to arrest the accused.

The provincial Q league chief was brought under strict security measures and he was provided the seat before the Governor’s Gallery where the attacker was sitting just a few feet away. The GovernorÂ’s Gallery was usually used for the diplomats and known dignitaries but the assembly staff allowed unknown people mostly belonging to political parties.

The assembly staff failed to explain as to who issued the pass to the attacker and who recommended for his pass while all the visitors’ passes had been cancelled after the disturbance in the assembly proceedings on the day of oath taking. On Monday the outgoing Speaker, Syed Muzaffar Hussain Shah, personally visited the assembly building and all the corridors along with the police officers, including DIG Javed Bukhari, and deployed plainclothes policemen for the security. The assembly session started more than two hours late behind the scheduled time and Arbab was brought at 11.45am. More than 20 police mobiles were escorting his car and he entered the house from the back door.

The Spokesman for the Bilawal House, Jameel Soomro, rejected the allegation of Arbab Rahim and said the PPP had nothing to do with the incident. He stated it was a plot against the PPP by involving some PPP (SB) workers.

The PPP said that it was the previous government that was controlling the administration and police including PPO and the CCPO, who were implementing the orders of the former ruler. He said even today the administrative machinery and police were given full authority to control the entry into the Sindh Assembly under a special strategy and some workers of the PPP (SB) were smuggled into the assembly premises for this incident. The PPP demanded immediate suspension of the IGP and CCPO.
