Policy to check vulgar content on channels: Firdous

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan on Friday said that the government was committed to ensuring freedom of media and its uplift by providing media persons a conducive working environment.

She expressed these views while chairing a meeting with Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) officials here. The minister stressed the need of media development in Balochistan and Gilgit-Baltistan like other parts of the country.

She said that a National Digitalisation Policy would be formulated to check the vulgar contents being aired by certain cable TV channels as these are against the country’s culture.Acting Chairman Pemra Dr Jabbar informed the meeting that a complaint cell will start working for the public convenience.

The complaints will be sent, not only via E-mail but also through toll-free call number, he said and added it will be operational for 24 hours. He apprised the meeting that around 89 satellite channels are operating in the country while 154 radio channels are also broadcasting their transmissions.

The Acting Chairman further informed that there are around 2458 cable TV licences, which had been issued to date. The process to issue about 408 new licenses of rural category are also in process, he added.
