Police thrash journalists for shootout footage

LAHORE: Police beat up a reporter and a cameraman of Apna TV channel, broke their camera and damaged the reel containing footage of a police shootout on District Courts premises on Wednesday.

Reporter Wasim Farooq and cameraman Atif Yasin had shot the shootout in which police shot dead one and injured two people in their custody. The police officials concerned demanded that they hand over the footage material. When they refused, the policemen beat them up, broke their camera and damaged the footage reel. Farooq told Daily Times that the cops had detained the two journalists for more than 20 minutes

Punjab Union of Journalists (PUJ) president Arif Hameed Bhatti has condemned the police highhandedness. Bhatti demanded that the policemen involved in the incident be arrested within 24 hours. Otherwise journalists would protest against the police, he said. Lahore Bar Association secretary Shamimur Rehman Malik also condemned the incident and assured the journalists of the bar’s cooperation.
