Police, Rangers cordon off KPC, SHC, City Court

*More than 100 lawyers including staffer of the Nation, 2 correspondents of private TV channels held*

KARACHI – Law Enforcement Agencies (LEA) hit state pillars in a course of emergency declared by General Pervez Musharraf the President of Pakistan.

The heavy contingents of LEA personnel including police and Rangers cordoned off Karachi Press Club, Sindh High Court and City Court buildings while torturing and hunting lawyers, journalists, and members of Civil Society and leaders of Opposition parities.

Police continues its crackdown against lawyer fraternity and arrested at least 100 lawyers including Barrister Salahuddin Ahmed son of Justice Sabihuddin Ahmed, restrained judges to get entered into the premises of courts those have declined to take oath under the PCO.

Heavy contingent of police siege the surroundings of Sindh High Court (SHC) in the morning as protest call was given by Sindh and Karachi Bars against the imposition of emergency in the country and removal of CJP Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry under PCO.

As the small numbers of lawyers gathered to stage protest outside the SHC, the police took them into custody and shifted to different police stations including Risala, City Court police station, Clifton, Defence, Atari Maiden, Preedy and Darakhshan police stations.

Police also cordoned off the Karachi Press Club when some activists of civil society get entered into the premises of KPC.

The heavy contingents of police and Rangers blocked the link roads of KPC and sent massage to the administration of KPC that let the people belong to the NGOs out of the KPC within fifteen minutes otherwise police would take action.

Witnesses said that activists of NGOs rushed to the KPC and chanting slogans against the emergency thereafter police came into action and scuffled with the journalists present outside the KPC.

Whereas, activists of NGOs get moved from the premises of KPC separately.

Police also arrested three journalists from the spot including the staffer of The Nation and two separate correspondents of private TV channels and taken them to the Clifton police station.

Whereas when The Nation contacted to the Advisor to Home Affairs Wasim Akhtar, Home Secretary Brigadier Ghulam Muhammad Muhtrum and City Police Chief Azhar Ali Farooqi,their phones were not responding.

Police also surrounded the building of a media organisation situated at I.I Chundrigar oad and get entered into the building and press section of the news paper while personnel get back without arrest of any mediaman.
