Plan to train 100,000 persons in Information Technology

KARACHI- The present government is planning to train during the current financial year about 100,000 persons in various information technology skills, which are needed across the world.

This was stated by the Federal Minister for Science and Technology, Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rehman. He said that in the realms of information technology, the government is focusing education, infrastructure as well as business development.

The Minister remarked that in the area of education we have gone in a big way. We have trained about 25,000 persons including some 15,000 government servants in various fields of information technology during the last one year.

These included medical transcription, data feed operators as well as a variety of other information technology related areas.”

He said that the government is in the process of setting up of seven information technology universities which include the virtual university that is going to be the largest university of its kind.

Prof. Atta said that there is a major programme of strengthening all the computer science departments in the country.

He pointed out that the Internet has spread from 29 cities in the country in August last to over 450 cities, towns and villages, which is something unprecedented in any country around the globe including the advanced world.

The Minister said that the bandwidth rates have been brought down from 87,000 dollars per month of two-megabyte line to now 6,000 dollars per month. This reduction comes to about 15 fold in price.

He pointed out that a discussion programme on the national information technology policy and action plan was held in Karachi.

The purpose of the meeting was to interact with the professionals in information technology and the telecommunications areas and to get input especially with software companies about what is required to be done in the realms of information technology in the days ahead.

Prof. Atta said that similar discussion programmes would also be conducted in other parts of the country.
