PESHAWAR: Women not taking interest in voters’ lists: NGO

PESHAWAR, June 19: The women voters are taking almost no interest in the voters’ lists displayed at the centres established by the Election Commission of Pakistan in different parts of the provincial capital, a non-governmental organisation has claimed.

The organisation – Association for Creation of Employment (ACE) – has launched a voters’ awareness programme during which it would educate people about the importance of the verification of voters’ lists.

Addressing a press conference here at the Peshawar Press Club on Tuesday, the ACE project manager, Zubair Khan, said the election commission had established 371 display centres in the provincial capital where the voters’ lists could be seen.

“This is the last opportunity for a voter either to correct or get his/her name included in the voters’ lists if it is not already there. These centres will continue to work until July 3,” he said.

He added that the ACE was a member of the Free and Fair Election Network (FFEN), an umbrella body of some 30 NGOs in the country. “The FFEN would observe the next elections and would also educate voters in this regard,” Mr Khan said.

He was of the opinion that it was vital for voters to visit the centres to verify the entries. “In each centre there is an in-charge whose duty is to facilitate the voters. If there is an error, a form could be filled for correction in the list,” Mr Khan added. His NGO was focusing on women voters as they were not taking enough interest in the electoral process, he said.
