PESHAWAR: Unidentified terrorists blew up the offices of a cable network in Chanagha Colony here early Wednesday morning while another locally-made explosive went off besides the Arbab Niaz Stadium, a few hours before Benazir Bhutto addressed a large rally there.

Police also arrested a 15-year-old suspect with explosive material when he was trying to enter the Arbab Niaz Stadium to attend the rally of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). The first bomb went off at the office of Ijaz Cable Network in Chanagha Colony at 5:00 am. Computers, furniture and the rest of the electronic stuff were damaged in the blast. The loud bang that was heard miles away also smashed windowpanes in the nearby houses.

It has been learnt that the owner of the cable network, Ijaz, had received a number of threats in the recent past, through which he was directed to shut down his office as it was spreading ‘immorality’. Several CD shops and video centres in the area have already wound up their business after frequent attacks on their businesses in the locality.

Another bomb went off at around 10:30 am near the Jinnah Islamia College in Faqirabad, close to one of the several entrances of Arbab Niaz Stadium, where PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto later addressed a major rally. The explosives were placed in a sewerage line. The blast did not cause any damage or casualty.

A few hours later, police arrested a 15-year old boy, Rahim Islam of Matani, when he was trying to enter the Arbab Niaz Stadium to attend the rally. The boy was carrying some 450 grams of explosives. It was later disclosed the explosives could not have been detonated, as it had no battery. No FIR was lodged in the case till late but the suspect was kept in Faqirabad police station to confirm if he was planning anything wrong.

Unprecedented security arrangements were made for the rally of the PPP chairperson in the light of suicide threats. Police from the entire district were deployed in or around the stadium so nothing untoward would happen.

The roads leading to the international cricket stadium, which was smashed during the political rally, were blocked from all sides and the traffic was diverted to other routes. Besides installing jammers and explosive detectors, flanks, pilots and escorts were provided to the cavalcade of the ex-premier during her visit to the city. Thousands of Peshawarites suffered in the surrounding areas due to the tightened security.
