Pemra imposes Rs10m fine on 10 TV channels

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) has imposed Rs10 million fine on 10 entertainment television channels this year for violating code of conduct by airing excessive foreign contents, reveals a document of Ministry of Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage.

According to the document, the local channels were airing excessive Indian contents from the prescribed limits. Pemra monitoring system is working round the clock to ensure the compliance of code of conduct and code of advertising.

Private TV channels of the country have been authorised to air only 10 percent foreign content which include 60 percent of the 10 percent (6 percent of the overall) may be Indian or other content; 40 percent of the 10 percent (4 percent of the overall) may be English content.

The fine of Rs1 million each has been imposed on following entertainment channels during the current calendar year on violation of code of conduct. The TV channels have also been issued warning letters to desist from such practice in future.
