Pakistan to enhance media interaction with Muslim countries

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Wednesday reiterated its desire to enhance news exchange and media interaction with Islamic countries, especially Malaysia and Brunei.

While briefing a seven-member media delegation from Malaysia and Brunei, Ahsan Yousuf Khan, additional secretary of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, said Pakistan attached great importance to its media relations with Muslim countries and wanted to adopt a joint media strategy to project their common goals. Cooperation among news agencies, newspapers and television channels in the Muslim world is imperative to project the Ummah’s voice and report events in their true perspective, said Khan. The delegation was briefed about recent developments in Pakistan both in print and electronic media and the government’s policy in promoting free media in the country.

The delegation was informed about mediaÂ’s priorities in covering news and interest in raising awareness among people.

Delegation members took a keen interest in seeing how Pakistan’s electronic and print media worked. They expressed the desire for greater cooperation between their organisations and Pakistani media. Those attending the meeting included PTV Managing Director Ashraf Azeem, Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation Director General Ashfaq Gondal, Principal Information Officer Chaudhry Rashid Ahmed and External Publicity Director General Mansoor Sohail.
“Not only are Pakistani journalists threatened by terrorists and rebel militants, but also those who ought to be protecting them: their own government and media companies.” The report suggested the immediate provision of essential safety items such as bullet-proof jackets and war insurance to journalists by the Pakistani government and media employers as well as professional training for safety and conflict.
