First ever satellite TV licence granted to Balochistan

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) in its meeting here Thursday decided to grant three more satellite TV licences including the first ever private satellite TV licence for Balochistan besides “Duniya TV” and “Prime TV”, says a press release.

With this addition the number of Pakistani licensed private TV channels would grow to 22.

The authority while examining the current status of electronic media in Pakistan resolved to maintain a level-playing field for all media operators. Chairman Pempra Iftikhar Rashid said that the application of M/S East Films (Pvt.) Ltd., Balochistan, has been considered by the authority. Once started the channel with the brand name of “Sabz Bat” would be the first private entertainment, news and current affairs TV channels from the remote province of the country. He asserted that the authority is constantly undertaking the endeavours to penetrate the health and sensible broadcast mediums to the nooks and corners of society.

The authority also took the decision of granting “Landing Rights” permission to 10 off-shore Pakistani and foreign satellite TV channels already on-air and approved the award of another specialised subject (academic) FM radio licence to Riphah International University, Islamabad.

The authority also approved the cancellation of 400 cable TV licences across the country on grounds of various violations and illegalities. The Pemra chairman apprised the meeting about the International Media Conference and Exhibition that is scheduled to be held in Karachi on May 15 and 16 of this year in collaboration with Pakistan Broadcasting Association (BPA) and the CASBA. This mega event has been aimed to generate conducive interactive environment for stakeholders and the media players eventually to put Pakistan on international media horizons, he said.

Besides Pemra Chairman Iftikahr Rashid and Executive Member Muhamamd Noor Saghir Khan, Secretary Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Anwar Mehmood, and other members including Dr. Seemi Naghmana, M/s Samar Minallah, Dr. Najma Najam, Umar Aziz and Asad Jahangir attended the meeting and appreciated the role of Pemra.
