Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) warns cable operators against screening of video cassettes, DVD’s
ISLAMABAD- The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority has warned cable TV operators against screening programmes through the VCR or DVD saying it was “illegal.”
In a notification the Licensing Department of the PTA said if the practice was not stopped “forthwith, the Authority will be constrained to take legal action” against defaulters.
The notification quoted clause 6.11 of the license that prohibited the licensees from screening progarmmes locally.
The official warning said that the programmes embraced exhibition of films, features, dramas, advertisement and serials through video cassette players or DVD’s.
The warning said that the PTA had received complaints in the matter and such transmissions contravened the Pakistan Telecom (Re-organisation) Act, 1996.
At the same time, the Federal Video Association said that the warning followed a recent meeting between its officials with the PTA during which the video dealers had protested against the illegal transmissions by the cable operators.
In a statement issued immediately after the government notification, the Association officials said that if it had not been done it would have rendered a large number of people jobless.
The Association asked the “Video Channel Operators” to abide by the government orders and close down their illegal operations.
