Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF), an independent non-governmental institution committed to promoting and defending freedom of expression is concerned over arrest of a broadcast journalist, Nuradin Hassan Ibrahim in Mogadishu, the capital city of Somalia, on 30 March 2014.
Quoting the information from National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ), PPF Secretary General Owais Aslam Ali in a letter to the President of Somalia said, Quote “editor of SkyFM Radio, Nuradin Hassan Ibrahim was arrested at the Crimes Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Mogadishu after being summoned for questioning. The officials questioned him as to how his FM station got news about a passport stolen from an official stationed at the Prime Minister’s office. Even after answering all questions, Nuradin has been arrested due to influence of General Abdullahi Gafow, head of the Immigration and Naturalization Services, who lodged a complaint against SkyFM at the CID. SkyFM is a sister station of Radio Shabelle, which has been subject of systematic abuses during the last couple of years”.
PPF condemns arrest of SkyFM journalist and demands his immediate release. PPF also urges the Somali government to stop harassment of journalist and allow him to exercise his constitutional freedom both as a citizen & a journalist.
