Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) organises seminar on Agra summit

KARACHI- A seminar for journalists on Agra summit under the caption of “the Journalists’ Perspective” was held under the aegis of the Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) on Friday at the PPF-Vicky Zeitlin Media Library.

The role of the electronic and print media in the image projection and diplomatic affairs of a country was explicitly elaborated in the seminar. The role played by the Pakistani media and especially the journalists during the Vajpayee-Musharraf Summit was unanimously admired. “It is the first time that Pakistan has expressed its point of view so effectively on the international front which would help in changing the world perception about Pakistan which is being continuously alleged for being involved in the so-called cross-border terrorism”, said the speakers. The need of an effective vigilance on Indian propaganda was also stressed in the seminar.

The seminar was attended by the eminent journalists of the country, including Resident Editor Nawa-e-Waqt Sajjad Meer, senior journalist and defence analyst Ikram Saigal, General Secretary PPF Owais Asiam Ali and Fazal Qureshi.

Sajjad Meer condemned the large Indian occupational forces in the Valley engaged in suppressing the indigenous uprising of the Kashmiri people. He deplored the Indian atrocities and the brutal acts of terrorism being done on the innocent people of Kashmir. He pointed out that the Indians are masters in propaganda and twisting the world opinion in one way or the other in their favour. He also emphasised the need of creating a media watch cell for keeping a vigilant eye on the Indian media propaganda and to deter it.

Ikram Saigal threw light on the security aspects of South Asia and the emerging geopolitical changes in the world. He asserted that South Asia has great importance for the whole world due to its geo-strategic position and untamed resources, and that the peace of this region is a prerequisite for the prosperity of the area which is not possible without the resolution of the core issue of Kashmir. According to him, America is just flirting with India to deter the danger of China as being the superpower of the world.

He further said that the freedom struggle in India is completely indigenous as no movement could be sustained so long from outside the area. He also appreciated the sacrifices rendered by Mujahideen for their just cause.

He also urged the journalists to keep themselves abreast of the factual situation.

Owais Aslam Ali stressed the need for establishing a broad infrastructure of electronic media in Pakistan that could project the right image of the country in the world.

Fazal Qureshi said on the occasion that Vajpayee invited Musharraf only after being compelled by his own internal political and international compulsions. India is facing the same situation as it was in the case of Russia, he added. He described the Afghanistan victory as the biggest achievement of the century for the Muslim Ummah. He exhorted that Kashmir is a disputed territory and this issue should be resolved according to the wishes of the people of the held Kashmir. India has to bow down in front of the Mujahideen pressure, he asserted.
