ISLAMABAD- Minister for Labor and Manpower Omar Asghar Khan called for creating a “culture of dialogue” to address issues facing the newspaper industry.

Speaking at a function in memory of trade union leader Nisar Usmani, he promised to make efforts for creating an atmosphere conducive for all those associated with this industry.

The minister said late Usmani was an “organic intellectual” who analyzed social changes in society and told the people about their possible impacts.

He said there is a need to find ways and create an environment, which takes care of the people associated with this industry.

“There should be a culture, which imbibes higher values, encourage freedom of press, improve working conditions and foster democratic norms,” said the minister. Omar assured to help resolve the problems like contract labor, wages and benefits of employees in line with the given principles while promoting the culture of dialogue.

The chairman Seventh Wage Board Award, paying tributes to late Nisar Usman, said he was one of those who laid the “foundation of truth”. He said “newspaper industry is in crisis and it is the duty of all of us to pull it out.” The newspaper industry, he said, can only run when both the employers and the employees are satisfied.

He asked the representatives of the employers to participate in the next meeting of the wage board being held on September 6 and 7 and present their point of view to resolve the issues in agreement. Justice Afarsiab said he wished to see all newspapers prosper and employers happily giving what is due to employees. He said it was his endeavour to give an award acceptable to both.
