Noted poet passes away

KARACHI: Noted poet and a known name in Karachi’s literary circles Azm Bahzad passed away on Friday morning. He was 52.

According to his close friends, he was suffering from ulcerous pain for quite some time which later became complicated and took his life.

He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.

Azm Bahzad was born in 1958 in Karachi. He belonged to a distinguished family of men of letters.

He was the grandson of a famous poet Bahzad Lakhnavi and son-in-law of another literary person, Anwar Bahzad. He did his early schooling and college education from Karachi.

He published only one book, a collection of ghazals and nazms, titled Tabeer Se Pehlay, but was in the process of writing more books, both of poetry and prose, which await publication.

The poet was identified with the new breed of Karachi poets who wanted to break away from tradition. There was a time when he would be seen in every important poetry symposium in the city. Two couplets that represent his personality and poetry the most is:

Main ne kal khwab mein aenda ko chaltey dekha
Rizq aur ishq ko ik ghar se
nikaltey dekha
Roshni dhoond ke lana koi mushkil to na tha
Lekin is daur mein her shakhs ko jaltey dekha
