No plan to impose curbs on media, says Firdous

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan on Thursday brushed aside the impression that the government was planning to impose curbs on the media. She said the democratic government was committed to media freedom and making all out efforts to expand it.

The government has the credit of lifting restrictions on the media imposed by the previous dictatorial regime, she said during a meeting of Electronic Media Relations Wing.

Director General of Electronic Media Relations (EMR) Wing Rao Tehsin Ali Khan briefed the meeting about the performance of the Wing and facilities being extended to the media in line with the vision of Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan. The minister directed the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to take more steps in collaboration with the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) to ensure provision of maximum facilities to media, specially to electronic channels so that they could perform their professional duties in a conducive atmosphere. She said it was an era of media and rapid growth of the electronic media had brought an ‘informative revolution’ in the country. She said an effective and vibrant media was enjoying complete freedom.

The minister said the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and media had rendered sacrifices for the freedom of expression and restoration of democracy. She underlined the need for capability building of the professionals associated with the media.

Accordingly, the government was taking steps to improve professional skills of media persons besides protecting the rights of viewers.
