Newsweek edition banned

The Pakistan government has banned the distribution of next edition of international magazine Newsweek as it contains material against Islam and holy Quran, reporter the BBC on July 23rd, 2003.

The customs authorities have been directed to seize the copies of the next edition of the magazine as an article published in it contains objectionable material about Islam and holy Quran, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said this in an interview with the BBC.

He further said that the action has been taken with the permission of Prime Minster Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali because he (Jamali) is the final authority, adding that as the article in the Newsweek could create anxiety among the Pakistanis, hurt their sentiments as well as infuriate them, therefore the decision has been taken to ban the distribution of its copies in the country.
