Newsmen deplore harassment

PESHAWAR- The Khyber Union of Journalists (KhUJ), has condemned the manhandling of a newsman by police and demanded a thorough probe into the incident.

In a statement the Union said it was deplorable to harass the journalists in a bid to prevent them from reporting wrongdoings of the police.

Mr Mahmood Khattak, a Peshawar-based newsman (Dawn) was manhandled by the police in the Kayak Bazaar when he was on his way to Tank from Peshawar, on March 16, 2003.

The newsman showed the documents of his vehicle but the Superintendent Police (SP) Karak, Mohammad Ayub, insisted to take him to the police station saying that he resembled to a carlifter. When he resisted, the SP ordered his subordinates to drag him to the police mobile. Some elders watching this, intervened and resisted, which compelled the police to allow him to go.

When contacted the SP denied the charges saying he only checked the documents.
