Increase in monthly CTV charges allowed

ISLAMABAD- The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) as well as the Federal Information Minister, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, have announced upward revision in the “basic CTV subscription from Rs 180 to Rs 225 per month”.

But the actual charge thus will be more than this amount as it will also include what is called the Premium Charges of Rs 125.00.

The result will be Rs 225 plus Rs 125 with the total coming to Rs 350 per month.

The installation charge of Rs 2,000 is a one-time non-refundable payment by the CTV clients.

The Chairman of the Authority, Mian Muhammad Javed, also spoke of a ‘Code of Conduct’ that Pemra had devised for the operators to block out materials that may promote communal or sectarian disharmony, pornography or unethical contents, avoid defamation and anti-national or anti-state attitudes and also materials that may be detrimental to Pakistan’s relations with friendly countries.

An overview of the cable television scene projected at the start of the Seminar said there were 922 cable licence holders in the country and there were some 120 illegal operators.

The largest number of the latter was in Punjab with Sindh having eight illegal operators. Neither the overview presenters nor the Pemra officials explain what action they proposed to stamp such operators out of business except that the “detection of such cases was being outsourced”.

Karachi leads in the number of legal licence holders at 270 with clientele of several hundred thousand, while Lahore comes next with 205 operators. The smallest number was in Balochistan where the operators numbered 17.
