Movies inspired murdered criminal

LAHORE — Violence and gangster characters in Punjabi movies turned an illiterate man to become a criminal of high rank which not only claimed his life but also that of his friends, an investigation report has revealed.

The criminal attitude of Muhammad Altaf alias Kala Gujjar, son of Mohammad Younus and a resident of Madina Colony, street No-4, H-No-58, cost him his life last month in Mughalpura police precincts.

According to police investigation, Kala was involved in more than 20 cases of heinous crime as he wanted to be a gangster after being strongly inspired by the violence in Punjabi movies during his childhood. The inspiration of aggression polluted his mind, who finally became a criminal and was killed at the age of 48 at Madina Colony. About 20 cases of dacoities, robberies, land grabbing, rape, illegal weapons, drug peddling, etc. have been traced against him in various police stations.

“It may be an inappropriate act to comment on Kala’s life after his death, but he was captured by film phobia and wanted to be a heinous gangster like a hero of Punjabi films, which he became and was finally killed,” a 55-year-old man using pseudonym Nadir Shah, of the same area where Kala was brought up and lived, commented. He said Kala Gujjar was a symbol of horror, but he was gunned down by his neighbours over an issue of honour in a pre-emptive attack.

According to the report, Kala Gujjar along with his gunmen Niamat Ali and a son of his (Kala’s) friend, namely, Adnan were killed by four armed men, including two brothers and their accomplices on April 11, 2011. Resultantly a case (335/11) was lodged under sections 302, 148 and 149 of PPC against seven accused including four real brothers.

The investigation in-charge Inspector Mohammad Zubbair Akhtar and investigating officer SI Mohammad Abbas Bhatti say that “Kala Gujjar had a criminal mindset from his childhood. He was an illiterate man and was improperly nourished and lived in bad company. He was highly impressed by violence in Punjabi films. These elements made him a dacoit, rapist and extortionist.”

Giving his background, Abbas said four brothers, namely, Bahadur alias Bahadura, Niamat, Karamat and Waris were neighbours of Kala Gujjar. Both the parties developed friendly relationships, even Mohammad Ali alias Gulla Gujjar, brother of Kala Gujjar, was enjoying family terms with one of the brothers of Bahadura.

“The family of Bahadura was strongly attached to saints and Mazaars which Gulla and Bahadura’s brother mutually visited. At one of the shrines, they developed some differences,” Abbas said.

Meanwhile, drunken Kala Gujjar visited Bahadura’s home and removed his clothes in front of the family members of Bahadura, besides intimidating that he would kill them.

According to him, Bahadura was discharging his duties as a security guard outside a mosque in Ramadan in 2010 when he had exchanged harsh words with Gulla Gujjar and finally killed him by spraying indiscriminate bullets with his licensed rifle. A case (918/10) was lodged against three brothers and their mother but after that incident the entire family of Bahadura settled in Quetta. “Kala illegally occupied five houses of Bahadura and further gave them on rent and openly announced that he would kill the family on their return,” Zubair said, adding Kala was a drug peddler, extortionist and rapist but none from the locality snubbed him from doing so.

On the other side, after committing the heinous crime the members of Bahadura family were filled with fear that Kala would kill them.

“Bahadura planned to kill Kala in preemptive measure before he closed the chapter of their lives,” Zubbair said, adding Bahadura along with his brother Karamat and two accomplices, namely, Nazeer Ahmed and Faiz Rasool arrived in the City on April 10 and early next day they visited Kala’s home and opened indiscriminate fire on him, his guard Basharat Ali and Adnan alias Sunny. Adnan and Kala died on the spot while Basharat breathed his last at a hospital. After this incident, a special police team under the supervision of Inspector Zubair and SI Abbas arrested all the seven criminals within a week and challaned them, who are in jail now.
