Media urged to update skills

KARACHI, February 24, 2005: The President of Karachi Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Khalid Firoz Arfeen, has stressed upon the need for the media to constantly update its skills in different fields so that the quality of business journalism in Pakistan continued to improve.

This he said at the inauguration of one-day workshop here in a local hotel on Wednesday, organised for financial journalists from all over Pakistan by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Pakistan chapter.

Appreciating the efforts of the ACCA Pakistan for organising such a workshop for journalists Arfeen said the KCCI would always support efforts to train and widen the knowledge base of the media as it was in the national interest to have an informed press.

He was of the view that such workshops for journalists should be held regularly so that the media persons could renew their skills and keep themselves updated.

Earlier, Arif Masud Mirza, FCCA, Head of ACCA Pakistan said that the ACCA Pakistan has taken a number of initiatives in Pakistan in keeping with its commitment to work in the interest of the public and would soon be announcing an initiative with SMEDA (Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority) to promote good accounting in the SME sector.

“This workshop for journalists is yet another example of our commitment to work in the public interest,” Mirza added.

He further said that ACCA created value for the profession and the business community through its innovative work in developing new qualifications, new services and new methods of delivery.

While taking to journalists, Mirza said that ACCP Pakistan would soon be launching “The ACCA Pakistan Business Journalist of the Year,” award which would be ACCA’s way of promoting good financial reporting in the media.

The president of the Karachi Press Club and well-known business journalist, Sabihuddin Ghausi, also addressed the workshop.

Speaking of his experiences as a business correspondent, he appreciated the efforts of the ACCA and asked other organisations to come forward and train future journalists of Pakistan.

Reporters from both print and electronic media from all over Pakistan largely attended the daylong workshop on “Reporting and Analysing Financial Statements.”

It is pertinent to mention that ACCA is the largest and fastest-growing global professional accountancy body with over 320,000 members and students in 160 countries. ACCA’s headquarters is in London, and it has an extensive network of over 70 offices and other centres around the world.
