Media must follow ethical standards

KARACHI: Media professionals, especially working journalists should be careful about ethical standards and principles while performing their duties, said Mubeen Azhar, a senior journalist working with a foreign media organisation. Speaking at a seminar titled ‘Guide to Media Ethics’ held at Department of Mass Communication, University of Karachi (KU) on Monday, he said that Pakistan’s independent media was relatively younger compared to the media of developed nations. However, despite high professional skills and use of modern technologies, attention is to be paid to professional ethics to ensure responsible journalism. He said the situation was not perfect and ideal in western countries as far as professional ethics were concerned. However, lapses on part of the media were rarely ignored in those societies. While showing newspaper clippings and videos of TV programmes found guilty of violating professional ethics, he said the convicted had to face punishments. He said laws were important but things would not change unless there was social pressure against the use of such practices. Mubeen said educational institutions played a significant role in producing professionally sound people for the media.
