Media enjoying full independence

KARACHI: Advisor to Sindh Chief Minister Ms Sharmila Farooqui while spelling out two-year progress of the PPP government, has said that through the dynamic and able leadership of President Asif Ali Zardari, the judiciary and media have got full independence in the country while real democracy has been flourished by taking major political parties on the board.

Talking to media men at her office here on Thursday, Sharmila criticized Mumtaz Ali Bhutto for issuing baseless statement against President Asif Ali Zardari in which he said that Zardari lacks able leadership. She said that Mumtaz Bhutto could not even resolved the vital NFC Award issue in real manner during his tenure and also failed to promote democracy what is justification for him to issue such statements.

“Mumtaz Bhutto must remind that owing to dynamic and able leadership of President Asif Ali Sardari, the PPP government supported lawyers’ movement and restored democracy in the country, she said.

”It is the President who ensured elevation of judges as per recommendations of Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry and thus avoided conflict between judiciary and the government. President also ensuring reinstatement of Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Mohammad Chudhry,” she said.

She said that the PPP government has provided many mega projects for welfare of the masses. “We provided Thar Coal Power Generation Project for 5000 mega watt of electricity. We gave nation a unanimous NFC Award which set a history in the country and boosted national harmony. We provided people of Balochistan with development and other packages that would change the fate of its people,” Sharmila informed. “President also provided development package to Karachi which has restored lost glories of the city.”

She said that PPP is also proud of the fact that ever biggest investment from the day of establishment of Pakistan in power sector was made during previous PPP government. “The power policy of 1994 led to an additional 3070 mega watt of electricity production, which in return, led to 3.5 billion US dollars investment. After the formation of Tarbela Dam in 1976, Ghazi Brotha started production of hydel power of 1450 mega watt electricity from the same water reservoirs in 1994,” she said.

Sharmila said that the PPP has also started various projects to alleviate poverty as Benazir Income Support Program worth Rs70 billion initiated by the present government will provide a major benefit in this regard.

She said that liberation of our people from poverty, ignorance, disease, establishment of a free media, an independent judiciary, a neutral civil service, rule of law and the settlement of disputes through reconciliation policy are the major achievement of the PPP government.

Sharmila said that the National Assembly and the Senate have also passed a bill providing protection to women against harassment at workplaces. The bill will protect women working in agriculture, industry and other sectors of life.

She said that the PPP has come to power through the blood of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto and many other party workers and that is why it has become very popular among the people.

Sharmila said that the PPP is the party of downtrodden people and is striving hard for the solution to the people’s problem. She said that the minority is the important segment of the society and the PPP government is also ensuring provision of rights to them.
