Media, civil society better judges: Arbab

Karachi:Sindh Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim, on Saturday said media and the civil society should themselves judge whether promulgation of national reconciliation ordinance was justified. He added, however “those who got their cases withdrawn through the ordinance should feel embarrassed.”

The Sindh CM said “I have not read the ordinance and I don’t know about its provisions or whether it should have been promulgated or notî he told newsmen at his chamber in Sindh Assembly building during voting for the Presidential Elections 2007.

Commenting on Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) MPAs’ absence from the polling process of Presidential Elections 2007, he said he was unaware whether PPP could boycott the polling process despite the deal with the government or not but said if they could violate the deal, government could also do so.

However, he refused to justify the deal between the government and the PPP, saying cases against corrupt politicians should not be withdrawn.

About PPP’s boycott of the voting process for the presidential polls from the Sindh Assembly, he claimed that they had asked ìparty high-upsî not to trust PPP as only ruling coalition had to vote in favour of the President Pervez Musharraf. When CM’s attention was drawn towards Justice (retd) Wajihuddin’s polling agent Noor Naz Agha’s request to the Presiding Officer that counting of votes should not be carried out, Dr Arbab said this request was made because he (Justice Wajihuddin) could not have gotten any votes.

He told a questioner that PPP boycotted the presidential polls otherwise there were chances that more votes could be polled in favour of President Musharraf.

ìPPP MPAs came to the gate of the Sindh Assembly building but should have come inside and took part in the polling as they too had fielded their candidate. Makhdoom Amin Fahim was PPP’s presidential candidate while Justice (retd) Wajihuddin was MMA’s candidateî he claimed.
