MBA president ends hunger strike on deposed CJP’s request

President, Malir Bar Association (MBA), Amanullah Khan, has ended his hunger strike on the appeal of deposed Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, on Tuesday.

The deposed CJP, in his telephonic address to the MBA, requested the president to give up his protest and leave the issue to God. He said that those involved in the massacre on April 9 would face the Almighty’s wrath.

Addressing the lawyers’ community, he said that the sacrifices of the legal fraternity, particularly of the MBA, in the struggle for the supremacy of the Constitution and for the restoration of democracy in the country, would not go to waste.

Condemning the incident of April 9, when the entire Malir Bar was torched by some miscreants, he said that God will punish those behind the killing of the lawyers. He expressed his deep concern and prayed for the bereaved lawyers’ family for patience and tolerance.

President Karachi Bar, Mehmood-ul-Hasan, speaking on the occasion, said that the lawyers would not come under any pressure and would continue their struggle for the independence of the judiciary and reinstatement of the deposed judges to their pre-November 3 posts.

However, the Karachi Bar has suspended their protest programme for the time being as they want that the government should fulfil its promise made in the Bhurban Declaration – the deadline (April 30) for which was already given to them, said Naeem Qureshi.
