Man ‘tortured to death’ by police

SIALKOT, April 18: A labourer seeking justice for his daughter was tortured to death by Motra police during investigation in Daska tehsil on Wednesday.

Two influentials, Waheed and Naveed, kidnapped and raped the daughter of Amanat. She became pregnant and gave birth to a child. The accused killed the new-born baby.

Amanat reported the matter to police which made a deal with them and instead of arresting them, they implicated him (Amanat) in a narcotics case.

The police arrested him and took him to police station where ASI Ghulam Rasool and others tortured him as a result of which he died in the police station. Later, the police handed over the body to the family asking them to keep silent.

Police have registered a case against the ASI and other officials with no arrest.

Meanwhile, the aggrieved family has urged the chief minister and Punjab IGP to provide them justice.

It is the second incident of death on an innocent person by police in Sialkot district during the last one week. Earlier, Saddar police tortured an innocent youth Hafeez in the police station during investigation for his suspect involvement in a murder case. The police registered a murder case against four of its officials, including Sub-Inspector Baqir Ahmad, with no arrest.hospital blast: Death toll in Pasrur hospital gas leak blast rose to three as Ghulam Murtaza, a retired armyman, succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday at Kharian Combined Military Hospital (CMH).

The Sialkot health department officials had shifted him to the Kharian CMH due to his critical condition.

On Tuesday, two paramedics were killed and nine patients, including two children, were injured in a big explosion at Pasrur THQ Civil Hospital believed to be result of gas leakage.

According to some official sources, SNGPL, health and buildings departments are `responsible’ for the incident, but none of them is accepting negligence.

No FIR has yet been lodged by the management of the Pasrur hospital due to unknown reasons.

On the direction of the CM, Health Minister Chaudhry Muhammad Iqbal and Power Minister Armaghan Subhani visited the Pasrur hospital on Wednesday. Sialkot EDO (Health) Dr Umer Javaid, district officer Dr Javaid Warraich and journalists were also present on this occasion.

Talking to newsmen at the hospital, the health minister said contradictory statements from all sides had made the matter complicated. He said the ground realities were negating all the statements made by all sides. The minister said the Punjab government had deputed special technical experts for solving the `mystery.’

EDO Dr Umer Javaid said the condition of the other injured people was stable.

Speaking on the occasion, Power Minister Armaghan Subhani said the Punjab government had announced a financial compensation of Rs100,000 for heirs of each deceased and Rs50,000 for the injured.

Both the ministers went to houses of the victims and condoled with the bereaved families.
