Man accuses in-laws of killing his daughter over dowry
PESHAWAR, June 27 2006: Parents of a girl, who reportedly committed suicide two days ago, have accused her in-laws of torturing her to death for not bringing enough dowry’. Saima Begum, 18, was married to 24Âyear-old Inayat Ali Shah son of Karim Shah, a resident of Dhaki Naal Bandi, Peshawar, some five months ago. Syed Mukhtiar, father of the girl, has said that Kabuli Police station, in whose jurisdiction the alleged murder took place, did not register FIR on his complaint. He has demanded of the provincial government to open probe into the killing, issue orders for postÂmortem of the girl and initiate further legal action against the culprits.
Mukhtiar, a poor farmer of Mardan, told Dawn that Saima’s in-laws used to taunt her for not bringing enough dowry with her. Saima, who visited his parents some two weeks ago, had comÂplained of such taunts and W-treatÂment by her in-laws. “We received a telephone on June 24th that our daughter had committed suicide on some domestic issue. We rushed to Peshawar and forced her in. laws to hand over the body to us and brought it to our village for burial,” he said, adding that the women who gave bath to the body found marks of torÂture and electric shocks on her arms and neck.
He said her arms were fractured and she had blue scars on her face and hands. “It was then we realised that she had been tortured to death by her inÂlaws,” he @d, adding that he submitÂted an application to the Kabuli Police station to register an FIR against the in-laws of his daughter, including Saima’s husband and his two sisters, for torturing her to death but the police refused to do so.
