‘Mai case’
THE editorial ‘Mai case’ was courageous as without mincing any words it said that it would be a shame if the case was not pursued further and the government would do well to ask the Supreme Court to review its verdict.
In a dissenting note, it has been written that it is quite normal that crimes of rape are not reported promptly.
Furthermore, it has been said that the complainant would further have to bear the agony of narrating the story in an open court in the presence of men and face harassing questions from the cross-examiner.
The rape victim relives the trauma every time she narrates the incident.
Mukhtar Mai faced all these odds and was acclaimed the world over for her courage.
With this verdict the voice against sexual assault has, perhaps, been scuttled.
