‘Lift emergency, curbs on media, reinstate judges’

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Union of Journalists (KHUJ) demanded on Friday that the government lift the emergency, withdraw curbs on the media and reinstate the judges.

The KHUJ demands came at its general body meeting held on Friday at the Peshawar Press Club. KHUJ President Jan Afzal and Peshawar Press Club President Muhammad Riaz briefed the general body about the ongoing agitation launched on the call of Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists, the country’s highest journalist organisation.

Through a unanimously passed resolution, KHUJ members condemned the imposition of emergency, restriction on the print and the electronic media and ‘unconstitutional and immoral sacking of the judges’. The general body rejected the press council, demanding the establishment of Pakistan Broadcasting Association consisting of provincial people to regulate private television channels. The journalists reviewed the ongoing anti-government movement and planned a strategy for the November 20 rally.
