‘Soomro should lift emergency, curbs on media’

MULTAN (November 17 2007): Caretaker Prime Minister Muhammad Mian Soomro should lift ban from all private television channels as a gesture of goodwill and he should also lift emergency and restrictions on the media, said the protesting journalists here on Friday.

Journalists’ protest against imposition of emergency and restrictions on the media entered its 8th day in Multan. President of Multan Union of Journalists, Nadeem Shah and President of Multan Press Club Shakil Anjum, General Secretary, Jamshed Rizwani said that caretaker setup should release all the political activists, lift ban on press and holding public meetings, rallies.

“It is shameful that the government has banned a few programmes given only conditional permission to restart the broadcasts of news channels,” said Shakil Anjum.

A delegation of PPP headed by Begum Nasim Chaudhry Ex-MNA visited the Press Club to express solidarity with the journalists. Similarly, a delegation of Jama’at Islami headed by Rao Zafar Iqbal provincial Naib Amir Dr Ashraf Ali Atique presented a bouquet to the office-bearers of Press Club.
