LAHORE- City police sealed off the entire Punjab Capital, shortly after unidentified motorcyclists gunned down two on-duty policemen during a brutal attack here in Nishtar Colony Area on Thursday night, police sources revealed.

“The gangsters sprayed volleys of bullets with automatic weapons (kalashankoves) on the policemen at Katcha Kumahan Road and fled away. Each policeman received over a dozen bullets,” replied SP Kot Lakhpat Sohail Sukhera, when contacted. The motives behind the deadly attack on the police were yet to be established.

“All the entry and exit points of the City have been sealed and the police patrolling has been stepped up across the provincial metropolis following the brutal attack on the law enforcement agency, which left two young policemen dead,” a senior police officer confirmed, when contacted. Both the policemen riding a motorcycle were on patrol at Katcha Kumahan Road near Shama Colony when they signaled two suspected persons who were walking alongside the road.

“As they tried to stop the suspected persons, they opened indiscriminate fire on the policemen. The armed men did not even give a chance to the cops to take out their guns,” a police officer said, seeking anonymity.

The policemen identified as Constable Arshad, 35, and Saif-ur-Rehman, 28, presently posted at Nishtar Colony police station, received over two-dozen bullets while the armed men managed to escape from the scene.

Constable Saif-ur-Rehman died on the spot while Arshad was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. Heavy police contingents including senior police officers reached the spot soon after the incident. “The police have sealed off the entire locality as gun-fitted police vehicles have started a thorough search to nab the desperate gangsters. A massive crackdown is underway in the locality while the police are checking the suspected motorists and passersby all over the City,” police sources disclosed to The Nation late on Thursday night.
