KARACHI: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) managed to free a family of 30 that was forcefully house-arrested by the men of local land lord, Lalu Baloch.

Chanisar, son of Balia, and his cousin Khushal, son of Rama, were two members of the 30-person family who managed to escape the forceful imprisonment and get help from the HRCP.

The family members, who belong to the Karo Bagh village of Tando Allah Yar district, were working on Lalu Baloch’s land as contract labourers responsible for growing tomatoes and earning 50 percent of the profits from the sale.

When the time for harvest came, Lalu Baloch, without consulting the workers, harvested and sold the crop. He also refused to give Chanisar and Khushal’s family it’s rightful share of the profit, and instead beat them up and threatened them.

The HRCP claimed that that they wrote a letter to the SSP for help, who referred them to the Gadap Police Station. The SHO of the station, Munir Ahmed Baig, promised to help Khushal and Chanisar’s family but he did nothing.

In response, landlord Lalu Baloch sent some armed men to the house of Chanisar and Khushal where they used physical force against their family members and held them captive.

The HRCP finally managed to release the family with no help from the police. SHO Baig maintained that the family is lying and blackmailing.

According to Chanisar, Lalti Baloch sold 10 acres worth of crop with a total cost of Rs 3,000,000, and only gave Rs 4,000 per month to the labourers.
