KARACHI: The City District Government Karachi (CDGK) has yet to complete the Shahrah-eQuaideen project that it has been delayed for the last 18 months.

The project to rehabilitate Shahrah-e-Quaideen from Shahrah-e-Faisal to Mazaar-eQuaid was announced early 2006 but work on different areas, especially between ‘Khudadad Colony and Mazaar-e-Quaid, ‘is still taking place. The slow pace of work to improve underground utility services is hampering the flow of traffic.

Sources in the Works and Services Department claimed that road carpeting will take a few days but it should be complete by then.

Shahrah-e-Quaideen is among the major arteries of the city as it connects Shahrah-e-Faisal to Tariq Road, Khalid Bin Waleed Road, New M.A. Jinnah Road and main M.A. Jinnah Road. The former two town nazims of Jamshed Town had repeatedly claimed to have finished the project in record time. “Last year, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) replaced various water and sewerage lines from Allahwali Chowrangi to Society Chowrangi and covered a major part of the open storm water drain from Shahrah-e-Faisal to Allahwali Chowrangi,” sources in the Jamshed Town administration office said.

Chief Engineer Zone 11-B Mohammad Arif told Daily Times that currently the KWSB was installing storm water drains from Khudadad Colony to Mazaar-eQuaid for a permanent solution to the accumulation of rainwater in the area. “Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) and Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) are working on the site to shift their underground utility services from between the road to one side of it.”

The service lane and the footpath from Allahwali Chowrangi to Khudadad Colony bus stop have not been completed even though the installation of water and sewerage lines had concluded some six to eight months back.

PPI/APP add: Baidia Town would begin receiving 6mgd of water in the next 25 days, after which Baldia, Orangi and SITE towns would receive water roundthe-clock.

City Nazim Mustafa Kamal said this at a reception held Sunday in Baldia Town that was attended by Town Nazim Kamran Akhtar and large number of people belonging to the community. Kamal said that, they had given priority to water and sewerage projects and billions of rupees had so far been spent to provide a better infrastructure to the citizens. “We completed signal free corridor-I in a short period of time with three flyovers and three underpasses and now a second signal free corridor of the city is being constructed to provide better transport facilities for the citizens. Only 10 percent of the work is left on a 48 km-long road to Mubarak Village and other adjoining villages in Keamari Town.”
