Karachi:An international agency would provide funds for the establishment of a modern Disaster management centre in Karachi with the cooperation of the United Nations. An initial amount of $15,000 is being provided to conduct a preliminary study of the project.

The leading operations officer of World Bank, Raja Rehan Arshad called on City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal in his office and said that the international organization would bear all expenditures in the establishment of Disaster Management Center as such a centre would be vital for a huge city like Karachi.

The City Nazim on this occasion said that being the biggest city and economic hub of Pakistan, it is essential to establish a disaster management centre in Karachi with all latest equipments and trained staff so that any crisis like situation such as natural calamity or mishaps could be dealt with appropriately.

He also directed the department concerned to prepare the required feasibility and initial study through foreign experts for early implementation of this project to ensure safety of the people amid any situation including earthquakes, torrential rains, windstorm and other natural disasters. The Nazim said that the work for this project should begin in three months so that the centre could be established as soon as possible.

He also directed city government officers to extend all possible help to organizations concerned on preferential basis in the establishment of disaster management centre including identification of required place and preparation of feasibility.

The City Nazim said that after experiencing worst of earthquake in 2005 in Azad Kashmir and Northern Areas these centres have become even more important and now the construction of multistory buildings should only be made after making it earthquake resistant.

The Nazim also explained that although City Government will fully cooperate with the international, federal and provincial disaster management department but the centre will be controlled by city government solely.
