ISLAMABAD: The government is finalising a law to determine the status of all those judges of the superior courts who were offered to take oath under the Provisional Constitution Order (PCO).

“To determine the status of these judges, proposals have been finalised and these judges would be entitled to all the benefits granted to the superior court judges after retirement,” Law Minister Syed Afzal Haider told reporters here at the Supreme Court. To a question, the minister said three vacant SC posts will hopefully be filled in the next couple of days.

The law minister said the Islamabad High Court (IHC) would be functional by January 01, 2008. He said that 5754 lawyers had been released while the remaining three, Ch Aitzaz Ahsan, Justice (retd) Tariq Mehmood and Ali Ahmad Kurd, had been released from prisons and detained at their homes.
