Karachi Union of Journalists condemns murder of journalist

KARACHI- Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ) has expressed grave concern over the murder of 26-year-old Shahid Soomro, a correspondent of daily Kawish, at Kandhkot on October 21, 2002.

President of the Union Qamar Ullah Chaudhry, General Secretary Rana M. Khalid and Joint Secretary Ajiz Jamali in a statement on October 24, 2002 said that it was a flagrant violation of freedom of press and manifestation of intolerant attitude of political workers in the society.

They said: “It is not the only incident as couple of other newsmen were either maltreated, kidnapped or murdered in the past for not toeing the political lines of the influential leaders of their respective area.”

They further said several others lost their jobs as they refused to distort the news items according to the wishes and desires of such influential leaders.

They said it is very important that the newsmen are provided adequate security so that they could discharge their professional obligations without fear and pressure. They added that the journalists are not only harassed in the remote areas and small towns but they are equally under pressure in urban centres and big cities of the country.
