Journalists walk out of National Assembly over media bashing

Tuesday, October 13, 2009
ISLAMABAD: Journalists on Monday staged a walkout from the National Assembly to protest against the insulting and humiliating remarks of PPP MNA Sher Muhammad Baloch on the media.

On a point of order, Sher Muhammad, who was disturbed with criticism of the Kerry-Lugar Bill and the role of the media, cursed the media, especially Geo. “Curse on the media, which took reaction from the common man on the Kerry-Lugar Bill. They are undemocratic and enemies of democracy,” he said.

Just after the journalists staged the walkout, Minister of State for Information Sumsam Ali Bukhari and PPP Information Secretary Fauzia Wahab came to the Press Gallery to calm down the journalists.

Later, Sumsam Bukhari and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Dr Babar Awan sought apologies in the House over the insulting remarks. Sumsam said in the House that the media had the right to express its opinion, so he requested the member not to comment on the media. National Assembly Deputy Speaker Faisal Karim Kundi also expunged non-parliamentary language against the media.
