Journalist arrested, freed

LAHORE, Senior journalist, Mahmud Ahmad Khan Lodhi who had been arrested on Sunday by the agencies on the charge of providing information to BBC team regarding Sharif family’s business affairs, was released from the lock up here on Tuesday. Mahmud said during his apprehension, the police used all sort of third degree methods against him. He said, on request, he had only provided the BBC team with a telephone number and residential address of Yousaf Aziz, a cousin of Prime Minister of Pakistan. He said it was wrong impression that an anti-Pakistan film was being made, and added, in fact it was pertaining to the matters of ruling family.

Punjab Union of Journalists and Lahore Press Club have condemned the arrest of Mahmud Khan Lodhi. In protest of his arrest, they also boycotted the Punjab Assembly session. Provincial Minister Raja Basharat later went to the protesters and assured them probe into the matter and action against those who kept him in habeas carpus.
