ISLAMABAD: Top leaders of mainstream political parties and leading figures in print and electronic media are expected to attend the two-day Pak media conference on ‘Media freedom, Se­curity and Laws’ begins here Friday (today) against the backdrop of the current countrywide struggle for Press freedom.

Arif Nizami, President Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE), will be the keynote speaker in the inaugural session on Friday. Hameed Haroon, President All Pakistan Newspapers Society, Salman Iqbal, President Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA), Mazhar Abbas, Secretary General PFUJ will lead discussions in three other sessions on the same day. IA Rehman, President and Najam Sethi, Secretary South Asia Media Commission will also deliver special addresses during these sessions.

PPP Chairperson Benazir Bhutto, PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif, PML-Q chief Ch Shujaat Hussain, President Supreme Court Bar Association Aitzaz Ahsan, MMA President Qazi Hussain Ahmed, JUI Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan, MQM Coordinator Dr Farooq Sattar, ANP President Asfandyar Wali Khan, Asma Jehangir Chairperson Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, Dr Hayee Baloch of National Party are among prominent invitees to speak at the concluding session on Saturday (tomorrow).

The conference was organised by South Asia Free Media Association (SAFMA) with coopera­tion of all representative organisations of print and electronic media including CPNE, PFUJ, PBA, APNS and South Asia Media Commission will deliberate on coordinated efforts to secure withdrawal of recent curbs imposed on the media and the broader perspective of freedom of Press in the country.

US Ambassador Ms Patterson will speak in the evening session on Friday. A declaration will be issued at the end of first day of the conference. Imtiaz Alam, Secretary General SAFMA, will present a special report on media freedom and security of journalists in the region.
