Electronic Urdu dictionary with translation facility
ISLAMABAD (November 30 2007): Pakistan on Thursday took a frog leap in bringing e-governance in public service by launching an Urdu software that would provide an electronic Urdu lexicon, (dictionary) and also enable English text to be read in Urdu translation as well as instant Urdu translation of English manuscripts, all this on one click on a computer.
Dr Abdullah Riar, the federal minister for information technology, inaugurating the software, called it a revolutionary step towards the development of Urdu. He added that the software had provision of dictionary, and additional features capable of translating text-to-Urdu speech as well as capable of converting English text in to Urdu.
He said the successful achievement had great potential for promoting Urdu literacy, and one, which would have astounding impact in bringing the language of science within the reach of the public in Urdu language. The software would thus impact their lives in important directions.
Providing information to the people is truly empowering them,’ he said, at the same time praising the government directorate of his ministry and also Sarmad Hassan, who had worked on developing the triple action Urdu software.
Talking to Business Recorder, before the inaugural ceremony, Dr Hassan described that nearly 200 electronic scientists had worked for six years on this project, which was assigned by the IT ministry’s electronic government directorate to the Fast University, Lahore, where he taught. The Urdu lexicon has stored 80,000 Urdu words. About 40,000 more words are also being added ‘this is more Urdu vocabulary that an average person could use in his daily life.’
