ISLAMABAD: Media stakeholders on Friday rejected the Provisional Constitution Order (PCO), emergency rule, code of conduct for the media and the two anti-media ordinances as a breach of social contract between the citizens and the state, and demanded the restoration of the constitution and a pre-November 3 judiciary.

The rejection was made in a declaration jointly adopted by the representatives of Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS), Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors (CPNE), Pakistan Broadcasting Association (PBA), South Asian Free Media Association (SAFMA), South Asian Media Commission (SAMC) and Media Commission of Pakistan (MCP) in a national media conference arranged by SAFMA here in a local hotel.

The media representatives, in the declaration, lavished praise on journalists for their struggle against the suppression of fundamental rights, freedom of speech, right to know and two ordinances (PEMRA and PNNABR ordinances), an extremely prohibitive code of conduct for media and clampdown on electronic media. They appreciated the support of international media, civil society and democratic forces in this respect.
