Islamabad has highest percentage of newspaper readers

ISLAMABAD: Limited households subscribing to newspapers due to low literacy rate and a few public libraries with too little membership has led to a culture of audio-visual medium for seeking knowledge and information that is quick but not lasting, says a report. The report to be launched shortly by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has been made exclusively available to The News.

It points out that among 111 districts; only eight have more than 50 per cent households subscribing to newspapers. It adds that the highest percentage of household newspaper subscription is in Islamabad (61.11 per cent) whereas the lowest is in Khuzdar in Balochistan (1.71 per cent).

It says that radio still remained the common medium for seeking knowledge and information, particularly in less developed areas, whereas television is preferred more in large cities. Karachi tops the list with the highest television viewer-ship of 81.55 percent. However, Balochistan has two districts Musakhel and Killa Saifullah with TV subscription lower than 10 per cent of households. For a society with high illiteracy rate, both radio and TV are a blessing to keep people informed and aware of new developments, the report says. Television, it adds, has invaded urban households faster than any other medium of information and entertainment and seems to have superseded all other media, especially in providing good quality entertainment.
