‘Blasts should not be excuse for rally ban’

LAHORE, Oct 22: The National Workers’ Party has demanded identification and accountability of the culprits responsible for the blasts during the Pakistan Peoples’ Party rally in Karachi instead of using the incident as an excuse to impose a ban on election rallies.

The demand was voiced through a resolution adopted at the meeting of the working committee of the Punjab branch of the party held here with Muhammad Aslam Malik in chair.

The resolution said spectre of terrorism haunting the nation for the past several years had been raised by the military establishment and religious political parties which, it alleged were opposed to democracy. The policy of military rulers to leave the political field open for the extremist forces had given rise to intolerance and militarism in society, it added.

The working committee called upon the government to desist from imposing restrictions on political process as it would be tantamount to denial of basic human rights. It should instead provide adequate security to leadership of all political parties to ensure transparency in electoral process.
