ISLAMABAD (December 14 2007): The transmission of local FM channel Power 99 has been restored after 40 days of suspension. Najeeb Ahmed, Director Programme of Power 99 FM and chairman of All Independent Radio Association (AIR) while talking to Business Recorder here on Thursday said that Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) on November 3 had confiscated their equipment without any reason.

“We tried a lot to find out the reason but did not get any satisfactory reply from regulator”, added Najeeb. The 40 days suspension of the channel caused huge financial loss to the management of the channel, said Najeeb. He further said that before the suspension of the transmission, the management was carefully and professionally running the channel. “The management of the channel comprised highly qualified professionals and was running it responsibly and carefully”, he added. The channel was suspended the day emergency was imposed in the country. And because of this, it is believed that the suspension was because of its coverage of the situation.

To dig out the reasons behind the suspension of the channel, this scribe contacted Pemra officials. They told that the actual reason behind off airing the Power 99 was violation of the rules and regulation of the authority.

“The channel was not suspended because of imposition of emergency in the country rather it was because the channel was issued more then five show-cause notices within the period of 4-5 months on airing the immoral content and violating the rules and regulations as prescribed by the authority”, said the officials. The Pemra also received several complaints from the general public about the channel on airing immoral content, they said. The officials further said that the authority has released the equipment of the channel.
