Internet merchant accounts allowed

KARACHI- The Internet merchant accounts have been allowed in the country. This was stated by Minister for Science and Technology, Prof Dr Atta-ur-Rehman, talking to reporters after inaugurating a seminar organised by Karachi Institute of Information Technology (KIT) at a hotel.

He said the Governor State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has issued instruction with respect to the Internet merchant accounts.

The minister said that the banks had been asked to provide deadlines by which their different branches would become electronic. He stated that the National Bank of Pakistan and Habib Bank Limited have sent the copies of their deadlines spreading over a period of next 18 months.

The deadlines would span over a period of three months each. “I am pushing this forward very quickly,” Prof Atta remarked, adding that the governor SBP is taking a great deal of interest. He said the government is trying to provide maximum facilities to the private sector in the field of Information Technology and is emphasizing upon providing better educational, infrastructural and legal focuses in this respect.
