Information Minister Tarar Meets Media Groups, Addresses Industry Challenges

On April 5, Minister of Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar held separate meetings with representatives from the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS), the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE), and the Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) to address concerns in the media industry. Tarar emphasized the government’s commitment to improving working conditions for journalists and resolving challenges faced by media organizations.

Tarar acknowledged journalists’ difficulties and pledged practical measures for their welfare, including expedited payment of outstanding dues and the distribution of health cards for journalists. He highlighted the information ministry’s role in facilitating communication between the government, journalists, and media entities. Additionally, Tarar assured strong measures to protect journalists’ rights, signaling a zero-tolerance policy for infringements on media freedom.

During the meeting, a delegation of the CPNE urged the government to lift restrictions on media outlets, emphasizing the importance of press freedom.  CPNE voiced concerns over increasing censorship, stressing the vital role of media in disseminating information and calling for an environment conducive to free journalism. They highlighted threats, harassment, and economic pressures faced by journalists, emphasizing the need to protect their rights and ensure their safety.

Furthermore, Tarar expressed the government’s dedication to addressing issues in alignment with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision, emphasizing the need for all stakeholders to collaborate for economic stability.
