Pakistan Press Foundation

In a press conference on April 9, Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ghulam Nabi Memon said that the hunt for more suspects is still active in the ongoing investigation into the murder of Jan Mohammad Mahar, a senior journalist associated with KTN channel from Sukkur, Sindh.

Mahar was brutally murdered on August 13, 2023, targeted by motorcycle-riding assailants near St. Saviour School on Queens Road, Sukkur as he was returning home from work. He was critically injured in the attack and later died at a private hospital after undergoing emergency surgery.

In response to the murder, an investigative team was formed on August 16,2023 headed by DIG Tanveer Alam Odho, to delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding Mahar’s death. The investigation gained momentum when the Sindh Home Department transferred the case to the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) Sukkur on September 1, 2023, in an effort to consolidate resources and expertise in the ongoing investigation.

The authorities have made several arrests in connection to the case. On September 16, 2023, police arrested three accused who facilitated the murder. On November 21, 2023, three influential locals were detained under suspicion of harboring the accused. Subsequent to this, on December 19, 2023, police managed to apprehend two more suspects, bringing the total number of individuals arrested to eight. Among those arrested are Bakhsh Ali Mahar, Babar Mahar, Munwar Ali Mahar, Sher Muhammad Shaikh, Muhammad Ramzan Shaikh, Bashir Mahar, Shero’s nephew Ismail Mahar, and an unidentified individual.

Despite these developments, the exact motive behind Mahar’s murder is still unknown.
