IFJ, PFUJ propose safety measures for journalists

LAHORE: The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) in collaboration with the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has proposed safety guidelines for local media persons.

The country has been declared one of the most dangerous of working places for journalists in the world due to its vicinity to war-torn Afghanistan and due to the ongoing wave of terrorism in the country. Dozens of journalists have lost their lives in several terrorist incidents and the Peshawar Press Club has been a target of suicide attacks.

The local and international journalist bodies have asked working journalists in Pakistan to give suggestions for ensuring safety of their lives and to finalise the draft of the proposed guideline, which would be tabled in the Federal Executive Council’s meeting of the union in the upcoming days. PFUJ and IFJ also asked the government to remove “unnecessary rules and regulations”, which prove a “hurdle” in the free movement of journalists and their access to various information sources.
