‘Govt to establish modern press club’

ISLAMABAD-The government will establish a National Press Club with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities at par with the international standards.

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Muhammad Ali Durrani announced this on Monday revealing that Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has already approved 6-canal land for the proposed Press Club with latest facilities.

“The building would also acquire recreation facilities at par with the international standards,” said the Minister while talking to journalists delegation from the twin cities.

The Minister said that the government would take all necessary steps to ensure speedy establishment of the press club, which is a long-standing demand of the Rawalpindi-Islamabad journalist community.

“The government is making all possible efforts to facilitate the journalist community and President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz have always extended full support in this regard. The press club would be fully autonomous and all necessary arrangements would be made to provide enabling environment to the journalist community,” he viewed.

The delegation comprised on President Rawalpindi-Islamabad Press Club (RIPC) Mushtaq Minhas, Secretary RIPC Afzal Butt, Senior Vice President RIPC Shehryar Khan, Vice President RIPC Jamil Mirza, Senior Journalists Salim Bukhari, Rana Tahir Mahmood, Mohsin Raza, Aslam Khan, Javed Siddique, Saud Sahir, Pervez Shaukat and CR Shamsi.

Federal Secretary Information Syed Anwer Mahmood, Additional Secretary Fazl-ur-Rehman Malik, Principal Information Secretary (PIO) Rashid Chaudhry, Director Minister’s Office (DMO) Qamar Bashir and others were also present.

The meeting unanimously decided that NESPAK would be given the task to design the building of the press club. The minister told that the federal government would bear all the expenses in the establishment of the press club and the ministry of information would forward a formal plan of action to the prime minister in this regard.

The meeting also decided to form a journalist body, which would assist the Information Ministry in finalizing the design and other details of the press club. The ministry has started the preparation of the PC-II for the project.

Secretary Information Syed Anwer Mahmood informed the meeting about the steps taken for early launching of the proposed press club in the federal capital.
