HEC to set up plagiarism monitoring cell

ISLAMABAD: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) will set up a plagiarism detection cell to monitor PhD theses and research publications.

The HEC plans to acquire high quality software that will compare the publication materials with international literature and will review copied items instantly.

According to a statement from the HEC on Monday, over the past few decades there have been incidences of plagiarism in Pakistan but no action was taken, as there was no easy way to detect such cases.

The commission has adopted a zero tolerance policy and instructed universities to take strict action against faculty members found involved in plagiarism to the extent of removing them from service.

Actions have been taken against some faculty members in the International Islamic University, Islamabad, in Government College University, Lahore, and are underway in the University of the Punjab.

The HEC has also decided that the universities which do not take action against plagiarism will have their financial grants curtailed. app
